| Okay, so my question is pretty simple. My step brother has a "new" (to him) laptop that makes a grinding noise, he asked me what it is, and I have no idea. The noise occurs frequently, but mostly when the surface it's on isn't level. I'm pretty sure the noise means it's gonna die soon, but not totally sure. So what is the noise, is it going to kill the laptop, and can it be fixed cheaply? | |

| Sounds like it's a fan. Don't know what else it'd be. Just take it apart and take a look. | |

| Sounds legit, the sound seems to be coming from the vent, and i'm pretty sure there's no cd in it. Thanks for the help! | |

| Sounds like a fan to me, or there's a wire that touches the blades slightly when you put it at an angle. It's already been said, but open the laptop up and take a look. | |

| UPDATE: So, i did what y'all said and took a look at the fan, and there was a thick layer (about 5 cm) of dust. Upon closer inspection, the dust was starting to grow moss. It looked like it was never cleaned out, and it makes me want to take a look at my laptop, considering i've had it for two years and haven't cleaned it... Thank you everyone! | |

| Sounds worse than anything I've seen before Good luck cleaning it up. I hope that the problem goes away after your huge layer of dust goes away. P.S. 5cm - Don't you use the Imperial measurement system? | |

P.S. 5cm - Don't you use the Imperial measurement system? i tend to go by the metric system for a few things, besides, i wanted to make sure you'd know exactly how much was in there because i knew you'd comment. I was thinking ahead. | |
